Social and Environmental Issues: GLOBAL WARMING by Mustafa Anis Hussain

Today, I would like to discuss a serious issue facing planet Earth - Global warming. The Earth’s average temperatures of near-surface air and oceans are rising. The Earth’s climate is complex and involves interplay amongst air, landmass and oceans. Global warming produces far-reaching harmful effects - melting polar ice sheets, rising sea-levels, stronger hurricanes etc.

This warming is the result of human activities such as producing heat-trapping greenhouse gases by burning fossil fuels such as coal, natural gas, and oil. These fuels are used to power our cars, factories, power plants, homes, offices, and schools. The fuel sources used by us humans are very harmful to the environment as they increase the rate of global warming. Global warming destroys rainforests, reduces glaciers, impacts farming and has an overall negative impact on our lives. Instead of using fossil fuels, we should use renewable energy sources such as windmills, solar cells and ocean waves which do not harm the environment.

Climate changes affect people, plants and animals. Scientists at Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) are working to better understand global warming and its effects. To cut down greenhouse gas emissions, we humans need to consume less energy and increase fuel efficiency. We should keep in mind the importance of the environment and the things we are harming while emitting any type of greenhouse gas. I will do my part to reduce, reuse and recycle to make our Earth a better place to live in and I hope all of you too have learnt some useful aspects of the harmful effects of global warming from this talk.
