Global Warming by Ahnt Htoo Myat

Global warming is the increase in the average temperature of Earth's near-surface that had started since the mid-twentieth century. It is caused by increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases resulting from human activities such as fossil fuel burning and deforestation.

Greenhouse gases contribute to an effect known as the greenhouse effect which used to make Earth absorb 50% of the heat and light energy of the sun at its surface and make Earth warmer. More greenhouse gases are rising up into the atmosphere due to factories and cars, so the process is intensified and Earth absorbs 60% of the heat and light energy of the sun at its surface now.

Most scientists predict that global warming will continue beyond 2100 if emissions of greenhouse gases do not stop because a large amount of greenhouse gases, such as water vapour, carbon dioxide, methane and ozone, is already in the atmosphere.

Global warming causes glaciers to melt and sea levels to rise, thus flooding low-lying areas around the world. Polar bears would become extinct due to lack of habitats. It would also cause extreme weather and changes to agriculture yields.

Most national governments had signed and ratified the Kyoto Protocol, which is aimed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the governments are also researching on other methods to stop global warming. Some options are mitigation to stop further emissions, adaptation to reduce damage caused by warming and geoengineering to reverse global warming.

Each time we drive a car, switch on a light or cook food, we are using energy created by burning fossil fuels and more greenhouse gases are rising up into the atmosphere. So, take public transport, switch off all electrical appliances when we leave a room for a long time and last but not least, reduce, reuse and recycle. All these little actions will add up and the effects of global warming will be weakened.

This is how the greenhouse effect works. Some of the sunlight is either absorbed or reflected by Earth's atmosphere but most of the sunlight is absorbed at Earth's surface and the surface is getting warmer.

These are greenhouse gases produced by factories. These gases contribute to global warming.

These are consequences of global warming. Most animal species will be extinct by 2100 if global warming continues.

Glaciers are melting because of global warming. Polar bears would become extinct due to lack of habitats.

This is a dangerous hurricane (Hurricane Katrina) which can destroy cities. This is how hurricanes form. Warm oceans heat up the air above them. Earth's rotation makes the warm air spin. When the warm air is 480km wide and spins at the speed of 118km per hour, it is an hurricane. More hurricanes like these are produced because of global warming.
